Academia has its place, it is unrivaled for exploring early stage science research and a bedrock for our drug discovery pipeline. That being said, most of the systems are outdated trying to keep up with increasingly scaled data sets and rapidly developing technologies while battling lack of consistent federal funding. Academia is mired in discriminatory practices and ripe for easy abuse from the tenure system - making professors all but untouchable once they have achieved the coveted tenure status. And with less stable jobs paired with increasing pressure to make your research stand out in the hostile grant funding cycles, it’s understandable why so many of us are leaving. We aren’t “selling out.” We are moving into spaces scientists need to be - communications, government, medical writing, law, helping repair the bridge the ivory tower of academia have so long fought to close off.
